Ne Plus Ultra? Is this Your Peak?

Almost a year ago, I sent out this letter to a set of graduate Civil Engineers to congratulate them and also to encourage them to push for the limitless living. For a successful man; his ceiling on this floor must be the ground he’s trampling upon on the next floor. If we all dare to move forward, we can always break the glass ceiling and tower high through the limits that abound. There is never an end to going forward. The worst enemy of success is past success.

NE PLUS ULTRA?

Dearest CVE ’16,

“Before the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain in 1492 and stumbled upon the Americas, the Spaniards had prided themselves on their misinformed belief that their country was the last westward point of solid land on a flat earth. Early Spanish coins were inscribed with the words ne plus ultra- which is a Latin phrase, meaning “no more beyond”. They believed there was nowhere else to go after Spain, and if one ventured into the endless sea, certain danger lay ahead.”

T. D. Jakes, Destiny 2015.

Of course, they were limited by just how far they could see. Discovery of America proved they were wrong. Even there is more after “the beyond”.

I congratulate you on your successful completion of your first-degree hurdle. Soon B.Eng. will be in the bag and you will be all over. It is a privilege for me to have spent a whole year with you guys and I want to thank you for making the moment worthwhile for me. I appreciate your fighting spirit and your doggedness. All the late nights, early lectures, impromptu tests, attack and defence, pre-informed drills and all the efforts finally paid off. You’ve not only been through fire. You’ve been through soil and water without leaving concrete, timber and steel behind. Thank God for not allowing local buckling.

Nevertheless, life is a series. It has no end. Even death that is presumed to be the end is merely a passage and not the end. There is really no end to what can be achieved or how far you can go if your heart is large enough to ask for more. To freeze your mind at this point in time might just mean you are painting another model of ne plus ultra. It will not speak well as there is always “another beyond” if you will dare to explore and delve into the realm yonder. Sam Adeyemi once said that when God created the earth, there were no geographical boundaries. I can also tell you that when God created you there was no boundary or restriction as to how far you can go, safe that which you build by yourself. He created you; a free being full of life and hope. He created an unstoppable and undaunted you.

I’ll tell you that there is more to you than what you see today if only you choose to go yonder. The world itself need you to search that’s why you see people talking about “research” because there is a need to search again even after the first search in order to make a discovery. When you search the first time and could not see it, re-search (search again). You are a secret you must continually work on to unravel and unleash the power within. End only come when you tell yourself “this is the end”. Release the free you in you to become all you were meant to be.

Engineer, now you face the life you’ve always been dreaming of. You are now the engineer you’ve always wanted to be. I hope you’ve planned and engineered the days ahead. Life is actually not a bed of roses. It comes with customized package of shock for each individual. Several facts and statistics will be staring you in the face. You will want to question yourself if you’re prepared for this life you are about to face. It seems things are just over-speeding. You discover you can no longer get the “second semester school fees” you’ve been getting from your parents again.

Weaning has started now. No more excuse of being a student.

“You’re a man/woman!”        you are told.

That’s why I’m taking it upon myself to challenge you to brace up for this shift. This change will not be a problem if you’ve been well-groomed. The only problem you could have is if you’re sloppy and careless with life. Now employers are eyeing you to know if you’re worth employing. Remember, there is always a “Man-U” (employer) that will be willing to break a bank to get a “Pogba” (you), if you are worth it.

Now is the time to develop yourself some more. Chase experience and value and I can assure you money will chase you. It is a principle of life; that money will always flow in direction of value. I can assure you there are jobs outside. The only question is if you have the needed skills.

Left behind? It is actually not a problem if you will take the bull by the horn by coming back next session to clear this mess. Your place at the top is reserved if you will be dogged in this fight. Show to the world that you are worth more than your certificate claim.

The limits you see are mental than physical. Look, see, and behold! There is more. Don’t rest on your oars. Take territories, shine, dare to dream and dream big. There is more than you are accustomed to. Don’t be paralyzed by the fear of what lies ahead. Move! Discover the plus ultra-living and you will be glad you did. Congratulations. With God, do more. Be more!
